Martha
Shugart has been a registered nurse at Morris Hospital,
Morris, Illinois since graduating in 1989 from St. Joseph
Medical Center of Nursing, Joliet, Illinois.
She acquired the unique certification of Trauma Nurse
Specialist in 1990 from St. James Hospital, Chicago Heights,
Illinois.
Martha served as Grundy County Deputy Coroner in 2001-05.
She was a member of the Child Death Investigation
Team for the Illinois Dept. of Children and Family Services
and a team member of the Grundy County Domestic Violence
Task Force.
Shugart was elected an Alderman for the City of
Morris in 2003 and has served since that time.
She has served as Chairman of the Health and Sanitation
Department, Chairman of Emergency Services/Disaster
Committee, Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Finance and
Administration, Chairman of Parks and Annexation Committee,
Vice-Chairman of Airport Committee and Chairman, Judiciary
and License Committee.
Shugart founded the City of Morris Beautification
Organization, which has provided landscape and improvements
of the Canal Port Plaza, and several parks throughout the
City. She
developed the Morris Farmers Market, providing locally grown
fruits, vegetables, and crafts.
She implemented several projects for children throughout the
City of Morris, focusing on environmental topics, healthy
living and recycling, reusing, and earth friendly solutions.
As Chairman of Annexation, Shugart successfully facilitated
the Morris/Channahon Boundary Line Agreement, which resulted
in the expansion of Morris by several hundred acres, as well
as consensus on the Brisbon Road Interchange project.
Martha also founded the Single Parents Organization
in Morris. She has worked with area teens to encourage their
participation in civic beautification projects including
flood rescue, while helping students earn public service
hours. She also
volunteers her time to speak with area youth about career
and life choices.
